Switching to Safer Deodorant

Throughout this journey of health and wellness, I have focused a lot on switching to safer products. I have used the same deodorant for over 10 years now, and I was dreading making this switch to safer. I hate change. However, I can happily share that I am ditching my aluminum-filled deodorant for a 100% plant content option! This change was difficult to make, but so worth it. I am switching to Rustic Maka’s Natural Deodorant. I want to share the process of this change and why you should switch to safer.

I received this deodorant in my Kinder Beauty Box this month, so I was happy to give it a try. Here are some reason why I now love Rusta Maka’s natural deodorant:

  • Contains Magnesium that effectively neutralizes body odor
  • Baking soda-free formula
  • Features non-gmo and organic ingredients
  • Free of aluminum, parabens and synthetic fragrances
  • Cruelty-free and vegan certified by PETA and Leaping Bunny
  • Recyclable containers and made in USA

The Process:

The process of switching to safer is always easy. I saw countless articles about how deodorant is bad for your body, but I never read into it. Regardless, I wanted to make the switch to safer! So, I tried my new deodorant and I was unhappy with the results at first. I was determined to not give up and give it a week before I went back to my old deodorant. I started to read more into the process of switching to a safer deodorant. I read that it helps to detox your armpits before you start using the natural deodorant.

If you have a charcoal mud mask or scrub, then I would definitely recommend detoxing your armpits before you make the switch. I used my Perfectly Posh Detox Body Mud. According to Perfectly Posh, “Charcoal is a great detoxifying ingredient that adsorbs up to 2,000 times its own weight in dirt and grime from the surface of your skin.” My armpits even stung a little bit, too. After I detoxed them, I tried my deodorant again. I was AMAZED at how much better it worked!! I sweated less and there was zero odor. I love it now!

Why you should switch:

The most common ingredient in your deodorant, is probably Aluminum. Aluminum is the antiperspirant that clogs your pores to prevent sweating. There has been countless amounts of research regarding aluminum causing cancer and being linked to the development of Alzheimer’s.

Another common ingredient is Parabens. You want to avoid parabens in ALL of your beauty products. These parabens are also known endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and can mimic hormones. This means that your body may treat the paraben chemical as estrogen and disrupt hormonal balances. That alone, is terrifying to me. Parabens have been found in breast cancer cells, too. The research is unclear whether aluminum or parabens can cause cancer, but I would rather just a void them both. So that is why I am switching to safer!

Some other ingredients that can be found in deodorants that are harmful to your body include: Steareths, Triclosan,Propylene Glyco, Triethanolamine (TEA), diethanolamine (DEA), and Artificial Colors.
